Frequently asked questions

What are Shopify ScriptTags?

A ScriptTag is a piece of JavaScript that an app asks Shopify to load on your storefront without any change to your theme code. Popups, chat widgets, review boxes, back-in-stock forms and tracking code have often worked this way. Because they do not show up in the theme editor, many store owners do not know which of their apps use one.

What changes on 1 March 2027?

Shopify has announced that apps can no longer create or update script tags since 1 October 2026, and that it stops injecting script tags into storefronts on 1 March 2027. An app that still loads its script this way stops showing that feature on that date unless its vendor has moved to a theme app extension (an app embed) or, for analytics-only scripts, a web pixel. Existing script tags keep running until then.

How does this check know which scripts are ScriptTags?

Shopify lists every ScriptTag it injects in the header of each storefront page, in a block with an asyncLoad function. That list is public, so the check reads it from your home page. Scripts from theme app extensions load from cdn.shopify.com/extensions, and scripts written into the theme are ordinary script tags in the page body; neither is in the list, so they are not counted as ScriptTags.

What can this check not see?

It reads the home page only. Scripts that load only on other page types (a product page or the cart), or only on checkout and order status pages, are not visible there, and the app that owns a script is identified by its web address, not by name. A clean result means nothing was found on the home page, not that the whole store is safe. Check again after app updates.

What about legacy customer accounts?

Shopify has deprecated the legacy customer accounts: new stores cannot use them, feature updates have stopped, and the final sunset date will be announced later in 2026. Stores on the new customer accounts send visitors from /account/login to a Shopify-run sign-in page; stores on legacy accounts show the classic login form from the theme itself. The check looks only at that first answer.

Is this check free, and do you keep my results?

Yes, it is free, needs no account and no installation. It makes two requests to your public storefront (the home page and the login address), the same pages any visitor can open, and we do not store your results or any personal data.

Is this legal or compliance advice?

No. It reports what the public storefront serves today and what Shopify has announced. It cannot see your Shopify admin. For the final word on a script, ask the app vendor.
